What is a cataract? A cataract is cloudiness of the lens inside the eye. The lens focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye. If it becomes cloudy, the light is unable to reach the retina and the vision is reduced. As the cloudiness of the lens becomes worse the vision becomes worse. Eventually the eye can become blind.
Cataract surgery is performed at Hibiscus Private Hospital using the latest phacoemulsification technology. The procedure, which sees the patient on their way home again in a few hours (in most cases) uses ultrasound waves to emulsify and remove the cataract. A tiny incision is made at the edge of the eye which allows for the replacement of the cataractus lens by a foldable lens that is introduced into the eye through the incision. Stiches are very seldom used with this new technique.
