Hospital welcomes new surgeon

Zizi’s Restaurant in Umtentweni was the venue for a Continuing Medical Education (CME) doctors’ gathering last Thursday.  The event, which was co-sponsored by Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone and Merck Serono, a biopharmaceutical company, was attended by 19 regional doctors.

In addition to earning CME points for attending the medical talks relating to the general surgery and oncology specialities, it was an opportunity for the doctors to meet Dr Andre Attfield, the new resident surgeon at Hibiscus Private Hospital who has taken over the practice of Dr Johan Rauch.  Dr Attfield, and Dr Diana Pillay, a Durban oncologist who visits Hibiscus Private Hospital monthly, made the CME presentation to the doctors attending. Further CME events incorporating other medical disciplines are planned in the new year.

Dr Attfield, who is from Johannesburg originally, studied at the University of Pretoria and qualified as a general surgeon at the University of Cape Town.  He comes to the Port Shepstone-Margate area from George where he was a general surgeon at George Hospital.  He and his wife have two children.

After only a few months in Port Shepstone, Dr Attfield says he has felt very welcomed in the area.  “From my time spent working in Hibiscus Private Hospital, it’s easy to recognise that everyone is very proud of it.  The staff is interested and happy to work there and have made me feel very welcome, from the receptionist right through to the matron in theatre.”

Hibiscus Private Hospital Executive Managing Director Richard Mills says, “We are very pleased to have Dr Attfield join the hospital as resident surgeon.  He has taken up the challenge of working in our busy hospital and we look forward to a long working relationship and wish him all success.
